Antonio
Machado (1875-1939) - renowned Spanish poet is celebrated in Collioure by
the annual Antonio Machado Day which is dedicated to his life and works. It is
held every year in February, the month of his death, and as part of the dedication
- there is international poetry competition as well as lectures, musical dance
and exhibits about the poet.
Machado arrived in Collioure towards the end
of the Spanish Civil War, after escaping Franco's dictatorship. Together with
his mother, he crossed the Pyrenees on foot. He died in Collioure just a few months
later in 1939. He and his mother are buried in the local cemetery.
