Charles
Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928) - renowned Scottish designer, architect and
artist spent the latter part of his life painting, and his final years, in Port
Vendres and Collioure with his artist-wife Margaret. They arrived in Port Vendres/Collioure
in 1923 and it was here that many of his distinctive blocky geometrical landscapes
were created. He produced more than 40 paintings during his four year period in
the South of France, leaving Port Vendres only when he became gravely ill with
cancer. He died the following year in London.
Mackintosh Art Trail:
1923-27 - Today
the Mackintosh Art Trail showcases more than 15 reproductions of his works in
the two villages at the sites where they were first painted. His spectacular works
are stylized and blocky - landscapes and buildings merge and distinctive geometrical
shapes and patterns are formed. Visitors can buy the 'Monsieur Mackintosh' booklet
which covers his art trail from Collioure's Espace Fauvre or at the Port Vendres
Tourist Office. Alternatively you can wander the coastal promenades and main coast road of Collioure and Port Vendres at your leisure and you will find the in situ reproduction panels. |
